Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The following information has been drawn from Health Canada, the Ontario Dental Hygienists Association (ODHA), our technology suppliers, and experiences of The Perfect Smile™.

What is included in a teeth whitening performed by The Perfect Smile™?

The procedure is in effect a five-step process that begins with an assessment as to whether or not the client is a good candidate for the procedure (see below), along with determining the initial tooth shade. This is followed by isolation of any sensitive tissue, application of the whitening gel with a Microfiber Brush, then relaxing for 15 minutes in front of a cool LED light (used to accelerate the whitening process). After 15 minutes, the gel is removed, and two (2) more treatments follow (and optionally a fourth). A tooth shade is retaken after the treatments are completed. The complete treatment takes ~ 1 hour. A Whitening Extender Pen for take-home touch-up is included.

Am I a good candidate for teeth whitening?

Health Canada reports that if you are pregnant, have mouth or gum disease or have teeth stained by medication, you should not use tooth whiteners. ODHA recommends a cleaning from a dental professional prior to teeth whitening.

Can tooth whiteners whiten caps, crowns, veneers, bonding or dentures?

No, only natural teeth can whiten. What can happen though is that the teeth surrounding the caps, crown … may whiten to the color of the crown, caps…

Is it safe?

Yes. After reviewing clinical studies, Health Canada reported that there is no concern about possible adverse effects on tooth structure or enamel hardness. In Canada, all tooth whitening systems are considered cosmetics and as such, manufacturers submit a cosmetic notification to Health Canada. Higher concentrations of the active ingredients are permitted for in-office formulas because they are applied by a professional who has precise control over the application and understands how it works.

What technology does The Perfect Smile™ use?

Our whitening products are sourced from a manufacturer with over 30 years experience in the dental field. The gel is 100% pure with no additives or fillers, and includes kosher USP glycerine and USP grade carbamide peroxide as ingredients. USP is the official standard setting body for prescription and over the counter drugs in the U.S.

Do you guarantee how many shades I will whiten?

Our experience shows that results vary by individual. That said, results achieved to have met or exceeded client expectations.

Will it hurt, I have sensitive teeth?

As Registered Dental Hygienist(s) (R D H) we understand your concerns. Your R D H at The Perfect Smile has the skills and competencies required to effectively isolate the gum area, and continuously monitor the process to insure a safe and effective treatment.

How long will my teeth whitening last?

That truly depends on an individual’s lifestyle and their consumption of coffee, colas, red wine, teeth staining foods, smoking… After initial treatment, many individuals receive touch up treatments every 6 - 9 months.

Is this the same treatment I would expect to get from a dentist?
