Dental Hygiene Services - Prevention Trumps Surgery!

Maintaining good oral health includes keeping teeth free from cavities and preventing gum disease, both conditions which can impact overall health. Beyond affecting your appearance, self-esteem and enjoyment of food, research links bacteria in plaque (tartar) to heart disease, lung infection, respiratory disease, diabetes and others serious ailments.

And older adults and seniors are also at risk. Gum disease, dry-mouth syndrome, oral thrush, bad breath… these all affect how you feel and play.

Health Canada recommends that individuals brush twice a day and floss daily, and visit a dental professional regularly. In Ontario, dental hygienists are recognized as a primary oral healthcare provider and as consumer, you now have the freedom to choose your provider.

The Perfect Smile's™ independent dental hygiene team provides a full suite of services designed to help you keep your teeth and gums happy, healthy and your smile bright.

The chairside dental hygiene practice features a relaxed, soothing and calming spa-like environment – free from the noise, smell and distractions present in more traditional offices. Sit back and enjoy the ambience, the music, and most of all, the gentle touch of your dental hygienist as you work together to assess, plan, then implement your treatment. At the end of your session, you leave the “dental spa” comfortable knowing that you have received the highest quality care, and feeling refreshed and relaxed. To the extent possible, we have re-created this environment for our retirement residence clients so that they to can have their teeth cleaned in a relaxed, friendly and calming environment.

Comprehensive Oral Assessment
All new patients undergo a complete examination, oral cancer check and periodontal assessment to determine the state of oral health and identify any conditions that may need immediate care. Medical and dental histories are recorded to establish baselines for future reference. As part of the oral cancer check, the head, neck, tongue and throat are all examined for suspicious lesions. All information is “charted” and at the end of the session, all records are stored for future use in accordance with The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) regulations surrounding privacy and medical record storage.

Referral to a dentist or specialist will be provided should the assessment indicate further diagnosis is required.

Regular teeth cleaning by a registered dental hygienist is a critical element of oral healthcare. Cleaning, or scaling, removes accumulated tartar (mineralized plaque/calculus) that may develop, above and below the gum line, even with careful brushing and flossing. Cleaning has as primary objective the prevention of cavities, gingivitis and periodontitis. For more information, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs) page by clicking here.

Tooth polishing is the act of smoothing the tooth surface and removing coffee, tea, tobacco... stains - giving you a whiter, brighter smile.

Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride combats the formation of tooth decay primarily by promoting the remineralization of the tooth, making the tooth more resistant to the formation of tooth decay and, by inhibiting oral bacteria’s ability to create acids which promote demineralization.

Tooth sensitivity is quite common in adults and the pain caused by sensitive teeth usually occurs after we consume hot, cold, or acidic food and drink. The dentin layer of the tooth, which is porous, easily transmit stimulus like hot, cold, sweet and sour or touch sensations directly to the nerve of the tooth. Your dental hygienist applies a desensitization agent to the affected area(s) to remedy the situation.

Sealant Application
Because the back teeth (molars and premolars) have numerous pits and fissures on their biting surfaces, certain areas of these teeth are often difficult to clean and the dental hygienist may apply a sealant to create a hard, thin layer covering the treated portions of the tooth.
